Crystal Stairs

Crystal Stairs is the largest nonprofit provider of early care and child development services in South Los Angeles, dedicated to empowering families and advocating for quality childcare and educational opportunities. Their mission—to “improve the lives of families through child care services, research, and advocacy”—is brought to life through programs that support both parents and childcare providers.

Crystal Stairs offer an array of services aimed at enhancing family stability and child development. These include subsidized childcare and referral services that help low-income families access licensed options, Head Start/Early Head Start and state preschool programs offering learning, health, mental health, and social support for children aged 0–5, as well as parent support initiatives, health outreach, and the Community Voices advocacy program to help families engage with policymakers

Rooted in the inspirational phrase “crystal stairs” from Langston Hughes’s poem “Mother to Son”, Crystal Stairs embraces a culturally centered vision, enhanced through vibrant artwork by Synthia Saint James that reflects the strength and unity of the communities it serves. This legacy is carried forward by committed leadership and a history of advocacy and community-building across over four decades
